AI is not the enemy. Surrendered agency is. A ten-point reading of Pope Leo's Magnifica Humanitas, translated out of theology and into the only thing that matters for your health: who is allowed to read your body, and who decides what happens next.

I want to say this clearly, at the top, so nothing about the rest of the piece gets misread. AI is not the enemy of humanity. The tech is not the enemy. The model on the other end of your message window is not the enemy. The thing that hollows us out, quietly, while we are looking at our phones in bed, is the slow surrender of our own agency. The handing-over — one default, one accepted recommendation, one passive scroll at a time — of the small, ordinary decisions that, taken together, make up a life and a body.

Last week Pope Leo published a long apostolic letter titled ‘Magnifica Humanitas’. The Vatican’s framing is theological. Ours is not. But the diagnosis is the same one we’ve been making, in plainer language, to people who come to us tired of being optimised by other people’s algorithms: tools are never neutral, attention is the new battleground, and the body is not data to be mined. Read it as a wellness document, with the church furniture moved aside, and it lines up uncomfortably well with the thesis we teach in the Core Course and live by on the membership.

ten points, translated out of theology

What follows is our reading. Ten of the letter’s threads, restated in the language we use with practitioners and individuals every week. We’ve turned each into one of the articles of the Agency Manifesto — the companion page to this essay.

01 — the anthropological question is the only question

Pope Leo frames this as a crisis of what it means to be human in the age of intelligent machines. We say it more bluntly: every health app, every wearable, every chatbot, every ‘your AI doctor’ pitch, is quietly answering the question ‘what is a person?’ — usually as ‘a stream of data points to be optimised’. That answer is wrong, and it is the foundation of most of what is sold to you as wellness. Start with the right answer and the whole stack changes shape.

02 — tools are not neutral

A scale measures weight, but it also teaches you what to care about. A sleep tracker measures hours, but it also rewires what counts as a good night. A feed measures clicks, but it also decides what counts as a thought. The letter calls this a ‘non-neutrality of means’. We call it the reason we are tool-agnostic but not tool-blind in the 3-Layer Method: the tool you choose decides what you are allowed to notice.

03 — attention is the battleground, not content

The fight is not over what you watch. It is over whether you have any attention left to direct at all. AI accelerates the extraction. The remedy is not less technology; it is structured, repeated practice at giving your attention back to something you chose: a Sunday review, a single long thread with one chat tool, a written ledger your body can actually be read from.

04 — conscience over recommendation

Pope Leo writes about formed conscience as the seat of human freedom. We translate: no recommendation engine — not ours, not your wearable’s, not your clinician’s AI scribe — should ever stand between you and a deliberate decision about your own body. Tools draft. Humans decide. That is non-negotiable, and it is the line we never let blur in the AI Health Stack.

05 — the body is sacred, not raw material

Whatever your metaphysics, the body is not a quarry. It is not a dataset to be mined, sold, federated, or used to train someone else’s model in exchange for a discount on the subscription. The starting position for any AI tool that touches your health should be: this body is not raw material. Most current offerings fail this test on page one of the privacy policy.

06 — data as common good, not commodity

Your health data is generated by you, in your body, on your time. The default position of the industry has been to treat it as a renewable resource for someone else’s roadmap. The Magnifica frame, secularised, is simple: data has a destination, and that destination should serve the person it came from first, the community second, and the shareholder a distant third. This is the spine of your own personal health stack.

07 — small communities, not platforms

Healing happens in rooms, not in feeds. The letter is unambiguous about this and so are we. The community is small on purpose. The cohort is small on purpose. The membership doesn’t gamify streaks. The point of being in the room is being in the room — not being measured while you are in it.

08 — truth over engagement

Most of the wellness internet is optimised for engagement, not truth. AI accelerates this brutally: it can produce plausible nonsense at a speed no human can match. The counterweight is hierarchy of evidence, named uncertainty, and the willingness to write ‘we don’t know’ on the page. The evidence hierarchy is not academic decoration. It is what makes the calm rhythm of this site possible.

09 — resilience is not productivity

What makes humans a resilient species is not throughput. It is the capacity to hold meaning under pressure, to make decisions that cost us something in the short term and pay back in the long, to refuse the optimised path when the optimised path would erase us. None of that compounds in a productivity dashboard. It compounds in a quiet ledger you maintain and revisit.

10 — freedom is the capacity to refuse

The final article of the manifesto, and the test for everything that came before. A tool that you cannot refuse is not a tool; it is a leash. A protocol you cannot opt out of is not care; it is management. A subscription you cannot cancel is not a service; it is rent on your attention. The mark of an AI literacy worth the name is the same mark of every adult freedom: you can walk away — from the app, from the platform, from the recommendation, from us — and still know who you are.

what this changes about the thesis we teach

Nothing, in fact. It clarifies it. We have always taught AI literacy for wellness as the opposite of ‘produce more content for the feed’. The Magnifica letter gives that opposite a name we already use: agency. The course, the membership, the stack, the resources — none of it makes sense if at the end of the year you are more dependent on someone else’s algorithm than you were at the start. The whole edifice exists to invert that arrow.
